Monitoring Cambodia’s Volatile Situation

Thai Airways Prepares for Contingencies

Thai Airways International is on high alert, ready to evacuate its staff from Cambodia if the intensifying border conflict with Thailand escalates further. The national carrier is closely tracking developments and plans to reassess its flight operations later today, prioritizing the safety of personnel and passengers amid the volatile situation along the Thai-Cambodian border.

CEO Addresses Crisis Response

Coordination with Embassy and Airlines

Chai Eamsiri, Thai Airways’ Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the airline’s proactive stance during a Thursday press conference. With a small team of technicians stationed in Cambodia, the airline is in constant communication with the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh and other carriers operating in the region. A decision on maintaining regular flight schedules, which currently serve around 3,000 booked passengers, is expected by the afternoon.

Border Clashes Prompt Action

Cambodian Attacks Trigger Response

The airline’s preparations follow a morning of violent clashes, with Cambodian forces firing on Thai military positions in Surin, Buri Ram, Si Sa Ket, and Ubon Ratchathani. The hostilities, including attacks near Prasat Ta Muen Thom and the Sai Taku border crossing, have led to both countries recalling their ambassadors, signaling a sharp deterioration in bilateral relations and heightened risks for those in the region.

Evacuations Ordered in Border Provinces

Protecting Civilians from Conflict

Governors of Surin, Buri Ram, Si Sa Ket, and Ubon Ratchathani have ordered evacuations of residents near the border, as confirmed by Ansit Samphantharat, Permanent Secretary for the Interior Ministry. Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai directed the evacuations, with additional preparations in Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat provinces to ensure civilian safety in case of further escalation.

Support for Affected Communities

Medical and Food Assistance Deployed

The Interior Ministry has activated an operational plan to secure frontline areas, establishing kitchens to provide food and coordinating with the Public Health Ministry for medical support. These efforts aim to address the immediate needs of evacuees and those impacted by the conflict, ensuring access to essential services as the situation remains unstable.

Embassy Urges Thai Nationals to Leave

Schools Closed, Travel Warnings Issued

The Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh has issued an urgent advisory, calling on Thai nationals to leave Cambodia due to the growing risk of prolonged conflict. The Education Ministry, led by Narumon Pinyosinwat, has also closed schools in Surin’s Phanom Dong Rak district and tasked the Office of Basic Education Commission with monitoring the crisis, reflecting a comprehensive response to protect citizens.
