Rescue Efforts Accelerate as Rubble Levels Drop

Rubble Clearance Progress at Disaster Site

Rescue operations at the collapsed State Audit Office (SAO) tower in Bangkok have gained momentum as rubble levels are significantly reduced. The disaster site, which suffered a catastrophic collapse during the March 28 earthquake, has seen debris in key zones lowered by about one metre, allowing rescuers to access new areas and uncover more victims. This progress in rubble clearance is crucial for ongoing rescue and recovery efforts at the disaster site.

Increased Access Leads to Discovery of More Bodies

More Bodies Emerging as Rubble Levels Reduced

With the rubble in Zones A and D now down to approximately 9.35 metres and Zones B and C at 7.41 metres, rescue teams are approaching the first floor of the 30-storey building. This reduction in debris height has enabled the discovery of additional bodies, raising the confirmed death toll to 53, with 9 survivors and 41 individuals still missing. The increased access is expected to lead to the recovery of more victims as teams continue to clear the disaster site.

Heavy Machinery and Coordinated Efforts Drive Progress

Rescue Teams and Machinery at Disaster Site

About 30 backhoes, operated by personnel from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, private contractors, and the military, are working around the clock to remove debris. Heavy machinery is being deployed to clear concrete piles, especially in the basement area, which measures roughly 40x40x40 metres. These coordinated efforts are essential for speeding up the rescue process and managing the complex logistics of the disaster site.

Forensic Identification and International Cooperation

DNA Analysis and Victim Identification at Disaster Site

Authorities have sent multiple sets of human remains and personal belongings to forensic experts for identification. DNA samples are being collected in coordination with the Myanmar embassy, as many of the workers affected are believed to be Burmese nationals. So far, 97 DNA samples have been gathered, ensuring that recovered victims can be properly identified and returned to their families. This forensic identification process is a critical component of the response at the disaster site.

Ongoing Challenges and Impact on Local Community

Community Disruption and Access Issues at Disaster Site

The ongoing demolition and rescue operations have led to road closures and disruptions for local businesses. Authorities are working with business owners to explore ways of reopening access, but a full reopening remains impossible due to the continued presence of medical teams and emergency agencies. The community surrounding the disaster site is experiencing significant challenges as the rescue and recovery mission continues.

Hope and Determination Amidst Tragedy

Continued Rescue and Recovery at Disaster Site

Despite the scale of the disaster and the slow, meticulous work required to dismantle the collapsed structure, authorities remain committed to recovering all victims and returning them to their families. The rescue teams’ determination and the community’s resilience are evident as efforts continue to clear the rubble and bring closure to those affected by the tragedy at the disaster site.
