Boosting Rail Tourism in Northeast Thailand

SRT’s Vision for Railway Tourism

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has partnered with local universities and 25 public and private agencies to transform rail tourism in the northeastern region. This collaboration aims to promote a creative economy and enhance the global competitiveness of Thailand’s tourism industry.

Northeastern Region Railway Development Project

Key Stakeholders and Objectives

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by SRT, Mahasarakham University (MSU), Loei Rajabhat University, and other stakeholders to drive research and innovation. The project focuses on leveraging local railways for immersive travel experiences, connecting tourist routes with local communities, and transforming cultural heritage into tangible tourism products.

Strategic Routes for Rail Tourism

Upper and Lower Isan Routes

SRT Deputy Governor Awirut Thongnet highlighted two primary routes: the upper Isan route from Udon Thani to Nong Khai and the lower Isan route connecting Nakhon Ratchasima to Buri Ram and Ubon Ratchathani. These routes aim to integrate local attractions with innovative tourism solutions, showcasing the region’s cultural diversity and natural beauty.

Advancing Sustainable Tourism

Eco-Friendly Transportation Solutions

Railway transportation is positioned as a safe and eco-friendly option for travelers. The initiative provides visitors with unique opportunities to explore northeastern Thailand’s landscapes while empowering locals to create services and commercialize activities that benefit secondary cities.

National Railway Development Alignment

Expanding Global Tourism Reach

The project aligns with Thailand’s national railway network development plan, aiming to attract international visitors. By enhancing connectivity and cultural exchange, the initiative promises transformative travel experiences that elevate Thailand’s status in global tourism.

A New Era for Rail Travel

Connecting Communities Through Innovation

This ambitious venture by SRT represents a new chapter in rail travel, combining innovation, cultural discovery, and economic growth. As northeastern Thailand’s railways prepare to welcome travelers, they promise unforgettable journeys that celebrate the region’s rich heritage and vibrant landscapes.
