High-Level Meeting Advances Phuket Expressway Development
Phuket officials are accelerating plans for the second phase of the island’s expressway project, designed to connect key areas and resolve long-standing traffic congestion. The latest discussions took place at the Phuket Highways Office, chaired by Governor Saransak Srikruanetra, bringing together representatives from the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT), provincial departments, and local municipalities.

Collaboration Among Key Stakeholders
During the meeting, Phase 2 Project Manager Therdsak Puangjinda and other senior officials, including Phuket Provincial Chief Administrative Officer Thiraphong Chuaychu, Phuket Highways Director Somkit Kittisopit, Phuket Land Transport Chief Adcha Buachan, and Patong Deputy Mayor Sanakorn Kisin, discussed the expressway’s design, timeline, and implementation. The group refined the proposal before it proceeds to the Cabinet for approval, marking a major step toward transforming Phuket’s transportation network.

Expressway Project to Improve Mobility and Safety by 2030
Governor Saransak Srikruanetra emphasized that the expressway aligns with Thailand’s national transport goals and supports Phuket’s long-term development vision.

“The expressway is crucial for improving convenience, speed, and safety, while also boosting the province’s economic potential,” he said.

The project is divided into two major phases aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving access across the island.

Phase 1 – The Kathu-Patong Route
The first phase spans 3.98 kilometres and features a four-lane road with a tunnel designed to include a motorcycle lane and a central control centre. Approved by the Cabinet in August, more than 75% of land acquisition is already complete, and contractors are being selected. Construction is expected to finish by April 2030, coinciding with the opening of Phase 2.

Phase 2 – Connecting Muang Mai, Koh Kaew, and Kathu
The second phase will cover 30.62 kilometres, linking Muang Mai, Koh Kaew, and Kathu. The environmental impact assessment (EIA) has been completed, and the final proposal is being prepared for Cabinet consideration. Public hearings will soon be held in affected areas, including Kathu and Patong, to gather feedback from local communities and stakeholders.

Enhancing Phuket’s Infrastructure and Tourism Growth
Deputy Mayor Sanakorn Kisin announced that Patong Municipality plans to develop the spaces beneath and around the expressway for public parking and transportation hubs, reducing congestion and accommodating future increases in tourism.

Unlocking Economic Potential Through Better Connectivity
Officials believe that once completed, the expressway will modernize Phuket’s infrastructure, improve logistics, and enhance travel between key tourist destinations. This improved accessibility is expected to boost tourism, stimulate local business, and support economic recovery in southern Thailand.

The expressway project is not just about reducing travel times — it’s about laying the foundation for a more connected, sustainable, and economically vibrant Phuket.
