Mild Earthquake Hits Chiang Mai

1.4-Magnitude Tremor Recorded in Phrao District

A mild earthquake measuring 1.4 on the Richter scale occurred in Chiang Mai’s Phrao district early Friday morning, April 11, at 4:33 a.m. The Thai Meteorological Department’s Earthquake Observation Division pinpointed the epicenter in San Sai subdistrict at coordinates 19.529°N and 99.222°E, with a shallow depth of just 1 kilometer.

No Damage Reported

Authorities Monitor Seismic Activity

The division confirmed that no structural damage or injuries have been reported in Chiang Mai following the tremor. Despite the minor nature of the quake, officials are maintaining close surveillance due to ongoing seismic activity in neighboring Myanmar.

Myanmar’s Stronger Earthquakes

Regional Tremors Raise Concerns

Earlier on Friday, Myanmar experienced multiple earthquakes ranging from magnitudes of 2.0 to 5.5. The largest tremor, measuring 5.5, struck at 11:29 a.m., centered at coordinates 20.847°N and 96.083°E, with a depth of 10 kilometers. Although these quakes did not directly impact Thailand, their proximity to the border has heightened concerns among Thai authorities.

Preparedness Measures

Residents Urged to Stay Alert

Thai authorities are urging residents in Chiang Mai and nearby provinces to stay informed through official updates and report any unusual vibrations or damage to local officials. The Earthquake Observation Division assured that it is closely monitoring seismic activity and will provide timely updates as needed.

This incident underscores the importance of vigilance in regions prone to earthquakes, especially as neighboring countries experience stronger tremors that could potentially affect border areas.
