Pep Guardiola’s Reaction to England’s Managerial Approach: What’s Next for Manchester City’s Boss?

Pep Guardiola has emerged as the leading candidate for the England manager’s job as the Football Association (FA) searches for a permanent replacement for Gareth Southgate. The Manchester City boss, who has led his team to multiple Premier League titles, is now reportedly considering an approach from the FA. The governing body is eager to find a world-class manager for the England national football team, and Guardiola tops their list.

With his current Manchester City contract set to expire at the end of this season, Guardiola is at a crossroads. While the FA has reached out to him, City are also keen on retaining the Spaniard. According to reports, Guardiola is mulling over a 12-month extension to his current deal with Manchester City. Although City would prefer a longer-term commitment, they would be pleased with a short-term extension.

Guardiola’s decision remains up in the air, as he has shown interest in managing a national team in the future. This makes the FA’s approach particularly enticing. However, the Spain-born manager also acknowledged that if he chooses a national team role, he is prepared to earn less than his current club-level salary.

Currently, there’s no set deadline for Guardiola to make a decision, but he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of staying at Manchester City or even taking a break from football. Should he leave City, a sabbatical remains a possibility, echoing his 2012 break after departing Barcelona.

When asked about the rumors surrounding his future, Guardiola told an Italian TV show that he hasn’t made any decisions yet: “Leaving City? It’s not true. I haven’t decided yet, and it is not even true that I will be the next England coach. If I had decided, I would say it… anything can happen.”

Lee Carsley, the current interim England boss, has also voiced his support for the FA hiring a “world-class coach” like Guardiola. Carsley himself is expected to return to his role with the Under-21s, leaving the door open for a top-tier manager to take over the senior team.

While Guardiola has not officially taken himself out of the running, his future remains uncertain. Whether he will continue his reign at Manchester City, take on a national team challenge, or opt for a temporary break, remains to be seen.

For now, Guardiola’s name remains firmly at the top of the FA’s list as they search for the perfect fit to lead England’s national football team into the future.
