Sala Chalermkrung, Thailand’s first royal theater, has proven its durability and cultural significance by emerging unscathed after the March 28 earthquake in Bangkok. Despite structural damage reported across the city, this 91-year-old architectural masterpiece remains intact, preserving its historic design while continuing to host mesmerizing Khon performances, live music, and classic theater productions.
On March 30, experts from the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning conducted a thorough inspection of Sala Chalermkrung. Their findings confirmed no structural damage, cracks, or safety concerns. As a result, the theater resumed its scheduled performances on March 31, reaffirming its role as a cultural hub in Bangkok.
Sala Chalermkrung was a visionary gift from King Rama VII to commemorate Bangkok’s 150th anniversary. Opened on July 2, 1936, it became a beacon for traditional Thai performing arts and cultural tourism. The theater was groundbreaking in its era, being the first in Asia to install air conditioning with a Chilled Water System from the U.S., revolutionizing the entertainment experience.
Designed by M.C. Samaichaloem Kritakara and Narot Photiprasat, Sala Chalermkrung blends Thai and Western architectural influences seamlessly. Its spacious interior features modern lighting and sound systems without obstructive pillars, accommodating over 1,000 guests in comfort and elegance.
Sala Chalermkrung remains Bangkok’s premier destination for live entertainment, showcasing traditional Thai Khon masked dance performances such as the Hanuman Khon Show. This UNESCO-recognized art form is performed Monday to Friday at 1:00 PM, 2:30 PM, and 4:00 PM, each lasting 25 minutes.
Visitors can explore Sala Chalermkrung’s rich cultural offerings at its Charoen Krung Road location in Bangkok. Tickets for performances are available starting at 1,000 Baht. For inquiries or bookings, contact the theater directly via phone or its official Facebook page.
