Rescue Efforts Underway After Early Morning Incident

In a tragic incident early Sunday morning, two Myanmar construction workers went missing following a landslide that buried their shelter at a construction site on Koh Samui. The landslide occurred around 4 AM in the Soi Hima Thong area of tambon Maret, prompting immediate rescue efforts from local authorities.

  • Details of the Incident: According to Pornchai Subprasert, head of the Samui Rescue Center, eight workers were sleeping when they were awakened by a loud noise. They discovered that one of their shelters had been engulfed by mud. Initially, the two missing workers were partially buried and called for help, but a subsequent landslide swept them away completely.

Ongoing Search Operations

Rescuers Face Challenging Conditions

Rescue teams, including soldiers and construction workers, are utilizing a backhoe to search for the missing individuals. However, they are proceeding with caution due to the unstable conditions of the area, which remains at risk for further landslides.

  • Weather Conditions: The Hydro-Informatics Institute reported that Koh Samui received over 200mm of rain in the 24 hours leading up to the landslide. The Department of Mineral Resources had previously warned that both Koh Samui and nearby Koh Phangan were at medium to high risk for landslides due to heavy rainfall.

Community Response and Safety Concerns

Authorities Urge Vigilance Amidst Ongoing Rainfall

Local authorities are urging residents and workers in the area to remain vigilant as heavy rains continue to pose risks. The situation is being closely monitored as rescue operations proceed.

  • Warnings Issued: The Department of Mineral Resources has alerted residents about the potential for further landslides, particularly in steep areas. Emergency responders are on standby to assist in case of additional incidents.

A Call for Safety and Preparedness

The disappearance of the two workers highlights the dangers associated with natural disasters in mountainous regions, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. As rescue efforts continue on Koh Samui, it serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures and preparedness in vulnerable areas. Local authorities are committed to finding the missing individuals while ensuring the safety of all residents and workers in the region.
