Continued Flooding and Its Impact on Local Communities

As of December 17, 2024, severe flooding persists in six southern provinces of Thailand, affecting thousands of households. Despite the challenging conditions, the four airports in the impacted regions remain operational, allowing for continued travel and transport.

Provinces Affected by Flooding

According to Pasakorn Boonyalak, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, the provinces experiencing ongoing flooding include Chumphon, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Ranong, Surat Thani, and Trang. The floods have resulted in eight reported fatalities and impacted approximately 161,605 households.

  • Current Conditions: In Chumphon, flooding has been reported in districts such as Lamae and Lang Suan, with water levels beginning to decline. Conversely, Nakhon Si Thammarat continues to face rising floodwaters in several districts including Bang Khan and Chalerm Prakiat.

Airport Operations Amidst Flooding

Airports Remain Open but Travelers Advised to Prepare

Danai Ruangsorn, director-general of the Department of Airports, confirmed that airports in Chumphon, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Ranong, and Surat Thani are still operational. However, travelers are advised to leave home three to four hours earlier than usual due to delays caused by flooded roads leading to these airports.

  • Travel Precautions: Passengers should stay updated on their flight statuses and prepare for potential disruptions as road conditions may vary.

Community Response and Support Efforts

Government Initiatives to Assist Affected Residents

In light of the ongoing flooding crisis, local authorities are mobilizing resources to assist those impacted by the severe weather. Emergency response teams are working diligently to provide relief and support to affected communities.

  • Relief Measures: The government is coordinating with various agencies to deliver essential supplies and aid to residents facing hardships due to the floods. Efforts include evacuating vulnerable individuals and providing shelter where necessary.

Navigating the Challenges of Flooding

The continued flooding in southern Thailand highlights the urgent need for preparedness and resilience among local communities. While airports remain operational, travelers must exercise caution and plan accordingly. As authorities work to support affected residents and manage the situation, the focus remains on recovery and rebuilding in the wake of this natural disaster.
