As Thailand’s EV market accelerates, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is stepping up its EV solutions to support this growth and further the country’s carbon reduction goals. With new charging outlets, EGAT aims to strengthen Thailand’s EV infrastructure and make the shift to electric vehicles more accessible to residents and businesses.

Expanding EV Charging Infrastructure in Thailand

EGAT is setting ambitious targets for its EV infrastructure development in Thailand, as part of its strategy to drive environmental sustainability and adapt to the expanding EV market.

New EV Charging Stations Across Thailand

EGAT’s expansion will see 110 new EV charging outlets installed this year alone, a significant increase from the 211 outlets recorded at the end of last year. With an additional 100 outlets planned for next year, EGAT is positioning itself as a leader in Thailand’s evolving EV ecosystem.

Collaborations with State Agencies and Building Owners

EGAT’s current expansion follows successful pilot projects that involved partnerships with state agencies and private building owners, paving the way for large-scale deployment. These collaborations are essential for broadening EV accessibility across Thailand, especially in urban areas where charging demand is likely to be high.

Leveraging EGAT’s Expertise for EV Market Dominance

With over 50 years in the electricity sector, EGAT brings extensive experience in supply, transmission, and infrastructure management—valuable assets in its quest to lead the EV solution sector.

EGAT’s “Blue Ocean” Approach to EV Charging Solutions

Despite the competition, EGAT views the EV charging market as a “blue ocean,” offering new opportunities for innovation and expansion. Nissara Thammapala, EGAT’s Director of Innovative Energy Solution Business Management, expressed confidence that EGAT’s decades of expertise will allow it to stand out amidst competitors.

Diverse EV Solutions Beyond Charging Outlets

In addition to charging stations, EGAT offers several other EV services, including charging facility installations, a user-friendly smartphone app for queue management, and consulting services for technical infrastructure. This comprehensive approach strengthens EGAT’s position in the EV market by addressing various needs of EV owners.

Supporting Thailand’s Growing EV Ecosystem

The recent surge in EV registrations and growing government support reflect Thailand’s commitment to a sustainable, electric-powered future.

Evolving Standards for EV Chargers and Installations

As Thailand’s Department of Land Transport reported a rise in EV registrations to 141,008 as of late October, national standards for EV chargers are in development. The Thai Industrial Standards Institute and the Energy Regulatory Commission are working on regulations, while the Engineering Institute of Thailand is drafting installation guidelines—all set to be completed by 2025. These standards are expected to ensure safe and efficient EV infrastructure.

Thailand’s Automotive Market Shift

In addition to the EV surge, Thailand’s automotive sector is facing changes, with a 25.48% decrease in production noted in September 2024. This shift indicates a growing demand for alternative energy solutions like EVs, which EGAT is ready to support through its expanding infrastructure.

Conclusion: EGAT’s Role in Thailand’s EV Future

With a goal to add 110 new EV charging outlets by the end of this year, EGAT is actively supporting Thailand’s transition to a greener, more sustainable future. Through innovative solutions, strategic partnerships, and leveraging its vast industry experience, EGAT is set to play a pivotal role in the nation’s EV journey, enhancing convenience and accessibility for EV users across Thailand.
