Preparing for a Travel Surge During Songkran

Don Mueang Anticipates Record Passenger Numbers

Don Mueang International Airport is gearing up to welcome approximately 700,000 travelers during the Songkran holiday from April 11 to 17, marking a 10% increase compared to last year. This surge reflects the growing demand for domestic and international travel during Thailand’s most festive season. Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) President Kerati Kijmanawat confirmed that the airport is fully prepared to handle the anticipated influx of passengers.

Peak Travel Day and Holiday Rush

April 11 is expected to be the busiest day as many workers return to their hometowns for the Thai New Year celebrations. To ensure smooth operations, the airport has implemented measures to accommodate the increased traffic, including additional staff and services.

Enhanced Services for Passenger Convenience

Free Parking and Shuttle Services

To make travel more convenient, Don Mueang Airport will offer free parking from 12:01 AM on April 12 until midnight on April 16. A round-the-clock shuttle service will connect the five-story parking building with Terminal 1 at Gate 6, ensuring passengers can easily access the terminals.

Boost in Flight Operations

A total of 4,391 flights are scheduled during the seven-day period, averaging 627 flights daily—an increase of 3.1% from last year. Of these, 2,705 flights are domestic, reflecting a robust 7.3% growth in local travel demand.

Passenger Statistics and Trends

Significant Increase in Traveler Numbers

The airport is set to handle an average of 100,234 passengers daily during Songkran, a rise of 10.8% compared to last year. This includes 282,490 international travelers (up by 6.9%) and a substantial 419,146 domestic travelers (up by 13.5%). These figures highlight the growing interest in both international tourism and local festivities.

Focus on Efficient Operations

To manage this surge effectively, Don Mueang has enhanced its infrastructure and operational capabilities. Passengers are advised to arrive at least two to three hours before their flights to avoid delays during this busy period.

Infrastructure and Security Enhancements

Strengthening Safety Measures

The airport has increased security personnel and installed additional CCTV cameras to ensure passenger safety. Travelers are encouraged to use the “Sawasdee by AoT” mobile app for streamlined services such as check-ins and flight updates.

Future Expansion Plans

Don Mueang Airport is also working on expanding its terminal space to accommodate up to 40 million passengers annually. This development aims to enhance service quality and generate additional revenue through commercial activities.

Songkran Travel Insights

Domestic Travel Leads Growth

The rise in domestic travel reflects a growing trend among Thai residents exploring local destinations during Songkran. With domestic passenger numbers up by over 13%, this segment is driving much of the holiday traffic.

International Tourism Rebounds

International passenger numbers have also increased by nearly 7%, signaling a recovery in global tourism as travelers flock to Thailand for its vibrant New Year celebrations.

Conclusion: A Festive Travel Experience Awaits

Don Mueang International Airport is fully prepared to handle the bustling activity of Songkran with enhanced services, free parking, and efficient flight operations. Whether traveling domestically or internationally, passengers can look forward to a seamless experience as they celebrate Thailand’s most cherished festival.
