A Legacy of Craftsmanship

The History Behind Bangkok Dolls

The Bangkok Dolls Museum, located in the Ratchathewi District of Bangkok, Thailand, was established in 1957 by Khunying Thongkorn Chanthawimol. Trained at the renowned Ozawa Doll School in Tokyo, Japan, Thongkorn brought her expertise to Thailand, creating a collection that now boasts over 400 handmade Thai dolls. Her dedication earned international recognition, including the first prize at the International Folklore Dolls Competition in Kraków, Poland, in 1978.

Preserving Thai Heritage Through Dolls

Thongkorn’s vision was not just about creating dolls but preserving Thai culture and tradition. The museum showcases themes from rural Thai life, hill tribes of northern Thailand, and traditional costumes from various eras. It also features costumes from other countries like Poland, Russia, Hungary, and Greece.

The Highlights of the Museum

Khon Dance Drama Dolls

One of the museum’s most captivating exhibits is its collection of dolls representing characters from the Khon dance drama based on the Ramakien. These dolls depict epic battles between forces of good and evil, offering visitors a glimpse into traditional Thai storytelling.

Miniature Khon Masks

Another standout feature is the display of miniature Khon masks. These intricate creations reflect the skill and artistry involved in crafting such detailed pieces.

A Unique Experience for Visitors

Antique and Collector Dolls

The museum is divided into two sections: one showcasing antique collector dolls that are not for sale and another featuring dolls available for purchase. Visitors can admire displays that highlight aspects of Thai life and culture, including colorful depictions of hill tribe villages and even a Nativity scene set in a traditional Thai context.

International Doll Collection

Beyond Thai dolls, the museum houses a fascinating collection of dolls from around the world. These pieces were either gifted to the family or collected over time, representing cultures from Russia, Spain, Finland, and more.

Practical Information for Visitors

Visiting Hours and Accessibility

The Bangkok Dolls Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. It is conveniently located near the Ratchaprarop Airport Rail Link station, making it easily accessible by public transport or motorbike taxis.

Souvenirs to Treasure

For those looking to take home a piece of Thai culture, handmade dolls are available for purchase at reasonable prices. These unique collectibles make perfect souvenirs or gifts.

A Cultural Treasure in Bangkok

The Bangkok Dolls Museum offers a rare opportunity to explore Thailand’s rich heritage through meticulously crafted dolls. Whether you’re a doll enthusiast or simply curious about Thai culture, this hidden gem is well worth a visit.
