Emergency Aid Pledged by China to Support Myanmar

China has pledged emergency humanitarian assistance of 1 billion yuan (approximately THB4.6 billion or $137 million) to aid Myanmar following the catastrophic earthquake that struck on March 28, 2025. The quake, with a magnitude of 7.7, is one of the strongest to hit Myanmar in a century, claiming 3,645 lives, destroying infrastructure, and leaving thousands without food, water, and shelter.

Allocation of Funds for Disaster Relief

Food, Medicine, and Temporary Housing Among Priorities

The Chinese embassy announced that the relief funds would be allocated to provide essential supplies such as food, medicines, and prefabricated homes. Additionally, the aid will support medical teams, epidemic prevention measures, and disaster assessment experts to address the immediate needs of affected communities.

China’s Swift Response to Alleviate Suffering

Deployment of Rescue Teams and Medical Experts

Beijing has sent over 30 rescue teams to Myanmar as part of its initial response efforts. These teams include medical professionals, earthquake specialists, field hospital workers, and rescue dogs. Their mission was aimed at alleviating the suffering of survivors and stabilizing the situation in disaster-stricken areas.

Reconstruction and Long-Term Support Plans

China’s Commitment to Disaster Assessment and Recovery

China has expressed its willingness to participate in assessing disaster-related losses and contributing to reconstruction efforts in Myanmar. The Chinese Red Cross has also provided financial assistance amounting to 1.5 million yuan (approximately $206,000) to further support relief operations.

Completion of Search-and-Rescue Operations

Departure of Chinese Teams After Mission Fulfillment

China’s search-and-rescue team concluded its mission in Myanmar on April 9 after successfully completing their operations. Their efforts have been instrumental in providing immediate relief and laying the groundwork for recovery in affected areas.
