Suspicious Activity Uncovered

Arrest in Krasang District

On August 5, 2025, Thai police in Buri Ram’s Krasang district apprehended a 36-year-old Cambodian man, identified as Win, suspected of being a member of the Bodyguard Headquarters (BHQ), an elite unit linked to Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen. The arrest, conducted by Lamduan police, followed reports of potential espionage activities targeting Thai military movements along the border. Authorities are investigating whether the suspect’s presence in Thailand poses a security threat amid heightened tensions with Cambodia.

Evidence of Military Ties

BHQ Uniform and Weapons Seized

During the raid on a residence in Krasang, police seized a shotgun pistol, ammunition, and a phone containing images of the suspect in a BHQ military uniform holding a battle rifle. The man, wearing attire with the BHQ logo and a camouflage hat, reportedly used four different names across his military card, passport, ID, and work permit. These findings have raised concerns about his intentions, with police suspecting he may have been gathering intelligence on Thai military operations.

Suspect’s Claims Questioned

Denies Active BHQ Affiliation

The suspect claimed he left the BHQ years ago and has been working in Thailand, living with his 27-year-old Thai wife in Krasang for the past year. He admitted to illegally crossing the Thai-Cambodian border into Sa Kaeo province in mid-July, further complicating his case. Police are skeptical of his account, given the evidence of military attire and weaponry, and are continuing interrogations to verify his statements and assess any connections to ongoing border disputes.

Heightened Security Measures

Border Tensions Fuel Vigilance

The arrest comes amid strained Thai-Cambodian relations, following recent border clashes and a fragile ceasefire. Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai acknowledged the need for stricter security protocols, citing similar incidents as cause for concern. The discovery of the suspect’s activities underscores Thailand’s efforts to safeguard national security, with authorities intensifying scrutiny of border activities to prevent espionage and maintain stability in the region.
