The Gunners boss believes a depleted squad made the difference in their Champions League semi-final first-leg loss.

Mikel Arteta has attributed Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-final to their extensive injury list, contrasting it with PSG’s fully fit squad.

Ousmane Dembélé’s first-half strike proved decisive at the Emirates, leaving Arsenal with a tough task in next week’s second leg in Paris. The performance was a far cry from their dominant 2-0 victory over the French champions in the group stage earlier this season.

When asked about the stark difference in both teams’ displays, Arteta emphasized the absence of key players, including Gabriel Magalhães, Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz, and Gabriel Jesus, while Thomas Partey missed out due to suspension.

“The margins were extremely tight tonight,” Arteta told CBS Sports“They began stronger for two main reasons—first, they managed to break our press with precise passing, and then individual quality made the difference for their goal. We also struggled in transition after winning possession, which is crucial against a side like PSG.”

Despite the early setback, Arsenal grew into the game, creating two clear one-on-one opportunities. “At this level, goalkeepers and decisive moments define matches, and theirs did that tonight,” Arteta added.

The Spaniard made it clear that squad availability played a major role. “It’s obvious why they were better—they’ve maintained consistency with a fully fit squad heading into April. At this stage of the season, having everyone available is vital, and that’s where they had the advantage.”

Arsenal now face an uphill battle to overturn the deficit in Paris, with injuries continuing to test their depth.
