Thailand Braces for Flash Floods and Landslides Amid Monsoon Onslaught

Thailand is preparing for turbulent weather, with monsoons set to bring heavy rain, flash floods, and landslides to 11 provinces. Simultaneously, cooler temperatures are expected across the northern region, adding to the volatile mix.

Monsoons Bring Deluge and Disaster Risks

Flash Flood and Landslide Warnings

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) has issued alerts for heavy rainfall and potential flooding and landslides, particularly in hilly regions and near waterways. Provinces in the southern region are forecasted to experience severe downpours and thunderstorms.

Intensified Monsoon Conditions

A low-pressure system from the lower South China Sea is heading toward the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia, intensifying the northeast monsoon. This system is expected to unleash torrential rains, heightening disaster risks in affected areas.

Cooler Temperatures and Health Precautions

Temperature Drops Across Thailand

A high-pressure system from China is bringing cooler weather across Thailand. Key regional forecasts include:

  • Northern Region: Temperatures to dip by 1–3°C.
  • Northeastern Region: Drops of 2–4°C, with chilly mornings.
  • Central and Bangkok Regions: Slight decreases of 1–2°C.

Health and Fire Hazards

Authorities advise residents to take precautions against seasonal illnesses as temperatures fall and to remain vigilant about fire hazards due to dry, windy conditions in some areas.

Marine Warnings: Rough Seas Ahead

Dangerous Conditions in the Gulf of Thailand

The Gulf of Thailand will experience high waves, with:

  • Upper Gulf: Waves reaching up to 2 metres.
  • Lower Gulf: Waves swelling to 3 metres during storms.

Mariners are urged to exercise caution, avoid stormy areas, and keep small boats docked until November 30.

Regional Weather Breakdown

Northern Region

  • Mornings: Cool with 19–23°C, mountain tops as low as 8–15°C.
  • Highs: 31–33°C with light winds (10–20 km/h).

Northeastern Region

  • Mornings: Chilly at 19–23°C, dropping to 12–15°C in mountainous areas.
  • Highs: 30–32°C with moderate winds (10–30 km/h).

Southern Regions

  • East Coast: 70% chance of thunderstorms in provinces like Chumphon and Surat Thani, with heavy rain and waves up to 2 metres.
  • West Coast: 60% chance of storms in areas like Krabi, with heavy showers and waves reaching 2 metres offshore.

Bangkok and Surrounding Areas

  • Partly cloudy skies with mild temperature dips (24–26°C minimums, 32–34°C highs).

Staying Safe Amid Thailand’s Wild Weather

Essential Precautions

  • Monitor local weather updates and heed official warnings.
  • Avoid risky areas prone to flash floods or landslides.
  • Mariners should follow sea safety advisories and avoid venturing out in rough seas.

Looking Ahead

With cooler weather and continued rain in the forecast, Thailand’s residents and visitors are encouraged to stay prepared and cautious as the nation rides out these extreme conditions.
