Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has urged Thai citizens to support government-led efforts to eliminate violence against women and children. The appeal coincides with National Violence Elimination Against Children and Women Month, observed annually in November, as part of a larger global initiative.

Thai PM Advocates for Action Against Domestic Violence

National Campaign for Violence Elimination

November has been dedicated to combating violence against women and children since 1999, in line with the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, celebrated on November 25.

This year’s theme, “Act Now to End Violence against Women and Girls,” underscores the urgency of:

  • Addressing domestic abuse.
  • Raising public awareness of legal protections.
  • Promoting empathy towards victims.

Domestic Violence as a Societal Concern

Prime Minister Paetongtarn emphasized the increasing prevalence of domestic violence in Thailand, noting its impact extends beyond individuals to society at large.

  • PM’s Statement:
    • “Families are the cornerstone of society, providing a protective shield and a foundation for security.”
    • She urged victims to seek immediate help via the Social Assistance Centre 1300 Hotline or local authorities.

NHRC Pushes for Legal Reforms to Combat Violence

Urgent Need for a National Agenda

The National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRC) has called for prioritizing domestic violence as a national agenda item.

Key recommendations include:

  • Legal Amendments: Strengthen laws to protect victims of violent crimes.
  • Inclusion of Marginalized Groups: Address vulnerabilities faced by women with disabilities and those from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
  • Protection for Activists: Ensure safety for female activists facing harassment.

Alarming Statistics on Domestic Abuse

According to the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth):

  • Over 30,000 women annually report violations, including physical assault and emotional abuse.

Public Responsibility in Ending Violence

How Citizens Can Help

Prime Minister Paetongtarn’s call to action highlights the need for community involvement:

  • Raising Awareness: Promote empathy and understanding within communities.
  • Encouraging Victims: Urge those affected to utilize available resources like helplines and support centers.
  • Advocating for Change: Support policies and initiatives aimed at eliminating violence.

The Role of Education

Fostering awareness about the causes and consequences of domestic violence is key to changing societal attitudes and breaking cycles of abuse.

A United Effort to End Domestic Violence in Thailand

Thailand’s leadership, supported by organizations like the NHRC, is driving efforts to combat violence against women and children. As November’s campaign gains momentum, collective action from citizens, government bodies, and advocacy groups will play a pivotal role in creating a safer and more equitable society.
