Airports of Thailand (AOT) has announced plans to compensate property owners affected by the construction of the third runway at Suvarnabhumi International Airport, a project expected to be completed early next year.

Suvarnabhumi’s Third Runway and Its Community Impact

Compensation for Affected Properties

The new runway, set to enhance the airport’s capacity, will have an impact on nearby properties. AOT is actively working to determine the number of residential homes and buildings eligible for compensation.

  • Key Details:
    • The third runway measures 4 km in length and 60 meters in width.
    • It will primarily be used for landings, complementing the existing two runways.
    • The expansion is expected to increase the airport’s capacity from 68 planes per hour to 94.

“The airport agency is currently finalising the number of residential houses and other buildings eligible for compensation,” stated Bangkok City Council Chairman Surajit Phongsingwitthaya.

Noise Pollution and Environmental Mitigation

Pollution Control Measures in Progress

To address concerns about environmental impact, officials from the Pollution Control Department are measuring noise levels in areas surrounding the new runway.

  • These assessments are aimed at ensuring proper mitigation strategies are implemented.
  • Discussions involving key agencies, such as AOT, the Transport Ministry, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, are ongoing.

Timeline and Anticipated Benefits

Revised Project Timeline

While the runway was initially expected to open by the end of this year, completion has been postponed to early 2025.

Enhancing Airport Capacity

The addition of the third runway is a pivotal step in addressing increasing air traffic demands.

  • Increased efficiency in handling takeoffs and landings.
  • Strengthened infrastructure to support growing tourism and cargo transportation.
