Photonic Computing
Photonic Computing is an emerging technology that uses light (photons) instead of electricity (electrons) to perform digital calculations. In traditional microchips, the movement of electrons generates heat and is limited by the physical resistance of the wires. Light, however, moves much faster and generates almost no heat, meaning photonic processors could potentially be hundreds of times faster and more energy-efficient than current silicon-based chips. This makes it a perfect candidate for the massive data demands of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data processing.
One of the biggest breakthroughs in this field is “Silicon Photonics,” which allows optical components to be integrated onto standard silicon chips. This bridges the gap between our current electronic systems and future light-based systems. Beyond speed, photonic computing allows for “parallel processing” on a massive scale, as different colors of light can carry different streams of data through the same path without interfering with each other. While still largely in the research and development phase, photonic technology is already being used in high-speed fiber-optic communications and is expected to eventually replace the traditional CPU in high-performance supercomputers.
