Edge AI
Edge AI is the combination of Edge Computing and Artificial Intelligence. It involves running AI algorithms directly on local devices—such as smartphones, drones, or industrial cameras—rather than sending data to a centralized cloud server for processing. This allows for near-instantaneous decision-making, which is crucial for applications that require high speed and low latency. For instance, a security camera with Edge AI can identify a prohibited object and trigger an alarm in milliseconds, without needing an active internet connection to “ask” a server what it sees.
By processing data locally, Edge AI also offers significant advantages in terms of privacy and bandwidth. Sensitive data, such as facial recognition or voice recordings, stays on the device instead of being transmitted over the web, reducing the risk of interception. Furthermore, it saves immense amounts of bandwidth by only sending relevant summaries to the cloud rather than raw video feeds. As specialized “AI chips” become smaller and more energy-efficient, we will see Edge AI embedded in everything from wearable health monitors that detect heart irregularities in real-time to smart glasses that provide instant language translation.
