Sudden Policy Shift Raises Eyebrows

Timing of Poker Legalization Questioned

On August 6, 2025, Bhumjaithai Party MP Korrawee Prissananantakul expressed skepticism about the Interior Ministry’s abrupt decision to legalize poker tournaments, coinciding suspiciously with a major event held on July 31. The order, signed by Interior Minister Phumtham Wechayachai on July 30, revoked a 1958 regulation banning poker, prompting concerns from the House Committee on Provincial Administration about potential gambling activities masked as a sport, especially given the tournament’s rapid approval.

Tournament Prompts Scrutiny

Allegations of Gambling Persist

The Bhumjaithai-led committee had questioned the Department of Provincial Administration and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports about the tournament, initially planned for July 30 but delayed by a day. Despite claims of postponement, the event proceeded with cash prizes and online betting promotions, raising suspicions of illegal gambling. Korrawee criticized the Interior Ministry, a key anti-gambling agency, for its swift policy change, urging a review to ensure compliance with Thailand’s strict gambling laws.

Poker Classified as Sport

Strict Conditions for Events

Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong clarified that recognizing poker as a sport does not equate to legalizing gambling. The new order places poker under Category B of the Gambling Act, requiring special permission and oversight by a formal Poker Sports Association. Sorawong emphasized that poker events are restricted to specific occasions, ensuring regulated environments, but critics argue the timing and execution suggest undue influence or oversight lapses in the approval process.

Calls for Equitable Support

Border Communities Seek Attention

Korrawee highlighted a broader concern, noting that the government’s rapid response to poker organizers contrasts with the slower aid for border communities affected by ongoing Thai-Cambodian tensions. The opposition MP called for the issue to be referred back to the Interior Ministry for further scrutiny, stressing the need for transparency and fairness. The controversy underscores the delicate balance between modernizing regulations and maintaining public trust amid Thailand’s evolving economic and social landscape.
