Affordable Travel Initiative
Flat Fare Launch Confirmed
Thailand’s Ministry of Transport has reaffirmed its commitment to launching a 20-baht flat fare across all eight Bangkok electric train lines starting September 30, 2025. Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit announced that preparations are on track, with public registration opening in August via the “Tang Rat” mobile app. This policy aims to make public transport more accessible, easing financial burdens for commuters in the capital and nearby areas.
Streamlined Registration Process
Tang Rat App Enrollment
Commuters must register through the “Tang Rat” app, available on iOS and Android, to access the 20-baht fare cap. The app verifies Thai nationality using a 13-digit ID number and links to an EMV contactless card or a registered Rabbit Card for train access. Suriya emphasized that the registration process is user-friendly, ensuring commuters can easily sign up to enjoy the capped fare across all metro lines.
Enhancing Public Transport Use
Cost Relief for Commuters
The 20-baht fare cap is designed to reduce travel costs and encourage greater reliance on Bangkok’s electric train network. By capping fares for trips on lines like the Blue, Purple, and Red, the initiative promotes sustainable urban mobility. Suriya highlighted that the policy aligns with broader goals to make public transport a preferred choice, reducing traffic congestion and environmental impact in the bustling capital.
Political Stability Assured
Policy Unaffected by Uncertainty
Despite recent political challenges, Suriya reassured the public that the fare cap rollout remains unaffected. All involved agencies are working diligently to meet the September 30 deadline, ensuring commuters receive the promised benefits. The minister’s confidence underscores the government’s commitment to delivering cost-effective transport solutions, regardless of external pressures.
Card-Based System Details
Temporary Dual-Card Requirement
In the first year, passengers may need to carry both an EMV card and a Rabbit Card when switching between lines, as compatibility varies. The EMV card works on the Red Line, Airport Rail Link, Blue, Purple, Pink, and Yellow lines, while the Rabbit Card covers the Green, Gold, Pink, and Yellow lines. Despite this, the 20-baht cap applies universally for registered users, with plans for a QR code payment system by late 2026.
Future-Proofing the System
QR Code Integration Planned
The Department of Rail Transport is working toward a fully integrated payment system, with QR code fare payments expected to roll out across all lines by late 2026. Pichet Kunathammarak, director-general, noted that late registrants after August 2025 can still access the fare cap, but only registered users will benefit. This forward-looking approach aims to streamline Bangkok’s metro system, enhancing convenience for millions of daily commuters.
