21 Suspects Apprehended

Thai police arrested 21 suspects—20 South Koreans and one Chinese national—on June 21, 2025, in Bang Lamung, Chon Buri, after rescuing a kidnapped South Korean man forced to work for a call center scam operation. The raid, prompted by a South Korean embassy tip, targeted a luxury pool villa, uncovering a sophisticated fraud network, as reported on June 22, 2025.

Swift Police Action

Raid Disrupts Scam Hub

At 2:30 PM, a joint team from the Tourist Police, Immigration Bureau, and Bang Lamung police stormed the villa, catching suspects working at computers. Several attempted to flee, with one injuring himself jumping from the second floor, but all were detained. The operation showcased Thailand’s crackdown on transnational crime, a growing focus amid 2025’s rising scam reports.

Kidnap Victim Freed

Safe Return Coordinated

The South Korean victim, reported kidnapped, was found unharmed among the group, coerced into scam activities. Police confirmed his safety and notified the South Korean embassy to contact his family. The rescue highlights Thailand’s commitment to protecting foreign nationals, especially as Chon Buri, a tourism hub, faces increasing scrutiny over illegal operations targeting visitors.

Evidence of Fraud Uncovered

Romance Scams Exposed

Investigators discovered a whiteboard with Korean-language messages promoting fraudulent investment schemes, linked to romance scams that lure victims into fake relationships to extract money. Such scams have surged 30% in Thailand since 2024, with losses exceeding 1 billion baht annually. Seized items, including computers, are under examination to trace the network’s full scope.

Legal Proceedings Initiated

Suspects Face Thai Charges

Pol Col Songwut Chueaplakij, superintendent of Tourist Police Division 2, stated that all evidence will be analyzed to confirm criminal activities, with suspects now in custody for legal proceedings. Charges may include kidnapping, fraud, and illegal work by foreigners, reflecting Thailand’s strict enforcement against cross-border scams, as seen in similar 2025 raids in Pathum Thani.

Broader Implications for Tourism Safety

Chon Buri’s Security Under Focus

The raid underscores Thailand’s efforts to safeguard its 36-million-visitor tourism industry, with Chon Buri’s Pattaya and Bang Lamung areas key draws. Recent crimes, like a Phuket villa burglary, have raised safety concerns, prompting calls for enhanced security. The bust aims to deter scam networks exploiting Thailand’s tourism hubs, protecting both locals and visitors.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

Thailand-South Korea Partnership

The operation, spurred by embassy collaboration, highlights Thailand’s growing ties with South Korea to combat transnational crime. With 1.5 million South Korean tourists expected in 2025, such actions reinforce Thailand’s reputation as a safe destination. Authorities are urging vigilance against scams, encouraging tips to police hotlines to curb illegal activities and maintain economic stability.
