Bangkok Streets Heat Up as Protesters Demand PM’s Resignation

Anti-Government Rally Sparks Tensions

Demonstrators Target Paetongtarn Shinawatra

Hundreds of protesters converged near Government House in Bangkok on June 19, 2025, calling for Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s resignation following a leaked phone call with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen. The demonstration, fueled by outrage over the call’s perceived conciliatory tone, reflects growing discontent with Paetongtarn’s leadership, amplifying Thailand’s political volatility.

Leaked Call Ignites Public Fury

Royalist Sentiments Flare Up

The leaked June 15, 2025, conversation, in which Paetongtarn referred to a Thai army commander as an “opponent,” prompted accusations of undermining national pride. Royalist activists, wielding placards like “Thai government with Khmer heart Get Out,” led the charge, criticizing her for appearing deferential to Hun Sen. The rally, organized by the Network of Students and People for Reform of Thailand, highlighted deep-seated frustrations with the Shinawatra family’s political dynasty.

Protest Organization and Demands

Network Leads Vocal Demonstration

Demonstrators gathered early at Chamai Maruchet bridge, where a stage facilitated speeches demanding Paetongtarn’s immediate resignation. The Network, known for questioning special treatment given to Paetongtarn’s father, former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, during his prison term, galvanized supporters to challenge her 10-month-old administration. The protest underscored broader concerns about sovereignty and governance amid a fragile coalition government.

Heavy Security Measures Deployed

Police Fortify Government House

Authorities implemented stringent security around Government House, deploying officers from Dusit, Nang Lerng, and crowd control units. A three-layer human barricade blocked access to the compound, while police vans and sound equipment reinforced the perimeter. Monitoring noise levels, which reached 111.5 decibels between 9am and 9:30am, ensured compliance with legal limits, reflecting efforts to maintain order during the heated rally.

Traffic Disruptions and Management

Roads Reopen After Early Closure

The protest initially disrupted traffic along Phitsanulok Road, from Pranakorn commercial intersection to Suan Misakawan Intersection, but roads reopened by 9am. Police warned that an expansion of the rally onto the streets could prompt renewed closures in both directions. These measures balanced public access with the need to manage the growing crowd, minimizing chaos in Bangkok’s bustling capital.

Political Context and Implications

Coalition Weakened by Controversy

The demonstration comes as Paetongtarn’s government teeters following the Bhumjaithai Party’s withdrawal from the coalition on June 18, 2025, citing the leaked call’s damage to national dignity. With her Pheu Thai-led coalition holding a slim parliamentary majority, the protests intensify pressure for a snap election or her resignation. The rally, backed by royalist and nationalist sentiments, signals potential for further unrest in Thailand’s turbulent political landscape.

Public Sentiment and Future Outlook

Protests Reflect Deeper Divide

The Bangkok rally, marked by fervent chants and nationalist symbols, mirrors Thailand’s polarized political climate, pitting conservative royalists against the Shinawatra legacy. As protesters demand accountability, Paetongtarn’s apology on June 19, 2025, has done little to quell anger. With additional coalition partners weighing their positions, the crisis threatens to reshape Thailand’s government, raising questions about stability in the coming weeks.
