Army Chief Addresses Coup Fears

Call for National Solidarity

Thailand’s Royal Thai Army chief, Gen Pana Klaewplodthuk, called for national unity on June 19, 2025, dismissing speculation of a military coup amid political and border tensions. Speaking through spokesman Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree at army headquarters in Bangkok, Gen Pana emphasized the military’s commitment to democracy and sovereignty, urging Thais to stand together against divisive forces, as reported on June 19, 2025.

Political Turmoil Fuels Concerns

Leaked Call Sparks Outrage

The statement follows a leaked June 15, 2025, phone call between Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and former Cambodian leader Hun Sen, where she labeled a Thai army commander an “opponent.” The audio, which surfaced on June 18, prompted Paetongtarn’s apology and the Bhumjaithai Party’s exit from the coalition, intensifying fears of political instability and military intervention in a nation with a history of coups in 2006 and 2014.

Border Tensions Add Pressure

Thai-Cambodian Dispute Escalates

Recent clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border, particularly the May 28, 2025, incident in Chong Bok, have heightened geopolitical strain. Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang, 2nd Army Region commander, confirmed on June 19 that his forces maintain routine patrols near the border, focusing on security rather than political disputes. Public support for Boonsin, displayed on a Bangkok billboard, underscores the military’s pivotal role amid the crisis.

Army’s Commitment to Democracy

No Coup on Horizon

Gen Pana reassured citizens of the army’s allegiance to Thailand’s democratic system, with the King as Head of State. He stressed readiness to protect national interests within legal frameworks, countering online rumors of a coup. Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai echoed this, guaranteeing no military takeover, aiming to quell public anxiety fueled by social media and media speculation.

Protests Demand PM’s Resignation

Public Unrest Grows

On June 19, 2025, protesters rallied near Government House, demanding Paetongtarn’s resignation over the leaked call, which they view as undermining military and national pride. The demonstrations reflect broader discontent with her leadership, compounded by economic woes and the coalition’s fragility after Bhumjaithai’s 69 MPs withdrew. The army’s call for unity seeks to calm these tensions and prevent further escalation.

Navigating a Volatile Climate

Military’s Role in Stability

Thailand’s volatile political landscape, marked by coalition fractures and border disputes, places the military in a delicate position. Gen Pana’s appeal for trust highlights the army’s intent to remain a stabilizing force, avoiding the coups that have historically disrupted governance. By prioritizing sovereignty and public cohesion, the military aims to steer Thailand through this crisis without resorting to extralegal measures.

Path to National Reconciliation

Unity as Defense Against Division

The army’s emphasis on unity underscores the need for collective resilience against internal and external threats, including misinformation and geopolitical pressures. As Thailand grapples with economic challenges, like a 23% SET Index drop in 2025, and diplomatic strains, fostering public trust in democratic institutions will be crucial. Gen Pana’s leadership seeks to bridge divides, ensuring Thailand emerges stronger from this turbulent period.
