No Summons Issued for Friday

Thaksin Shinawatra, Thailand’s former prime minister, will not attend a Supreme Court hearing on June 13, 2025, which examines whether his extended hospital stay constituted proper service of his prison term. His lawyer, Winyat Chatmontree, confirmed Thaksin was not summoned, alleviating the need for his presence.

Legal Team to Represent Thaksin

Clarifications Set for Court

While Thaksin will not appear, his legal representatives will attend the Supreme Court’s Criminal Case Division for Persons Holding Political Positions to provide clarifications. The team is prepared to address questions regarding the former leader’s controversial time at Police General Hospital.

Court Reviews Hospital Stay

Investigating Prison Term Compliance

In April, the Supreme Court initiated a probe into whether Thaksin’s prolonged stay at Police General Hospital fulfilled his one-year sentence, reduced from eight years via royal clemency. The inquiry stems from a dismissed petition questioning the legitimacy of his hospital-based detention.

Thaksin’s Return and Sentencing

Swift Hospital Transfer Raises Questions

Thaksin returned to Thailand on August 22, 2023, after 15 years in self-exile, facing an eight-year sentence for abuse of power and conflict of interest. Moved to Police General Hospital just 13 hours after entering Bangkok Remand Prison, his rapid transfer fueled speculation about special treatment.

Parole and Health Claims Scrutinized

Opposition Demands Evidence

Thaksin remained in hospital until his parole in early 2024, prompting critics to demand proof of a serious illness, especially after his improved health post-release. The Medical Council of Thailand found no evidence of critical illness, leading to disciplinary action against involved doctors.

Confidentiality Concerns Persist

Officials Cite Patient Privacy

Authorities have consistently cited patient data confidentiality and potential health risks to justify Thaksin’s hospital stay, avoiding detailed disclosures. These claims have been met with skepticism, intensifying public and political debate over the fairness of his treatment during incarceration.

Document Deadline Extended

Court Grants 30-Day Postponement

Thaksin requested a 30-day extension for document submission, which the court rescheduled for July 23. This delay allows his legal team additional time to prepare, as the Supreme Court continues to navigate this high-profile case with significant public interest.
