Query Raised Over Cash Origin

Three opposition MPs from the People’s Party—Pukkamon Nunarnan, Rukchanok Srinork, and Phanida Mongkolsawat—have urged the Revenue Department to probe the source of 12 million baht found discarded by lawyer Taweewat Sengkaew, an adviser to the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission. The MPs submitted their request on Monday, June 9, 2025, questioning how the cash ended up in a garbage area at his Muang Thong Thani condo in Nonthaburi, sparking widespread concern.

Discovery Sparks Suspicion

Resident Finds Cash in Plastic Box

The incident unfolded when a resident, intending to reuse a discarded plastic box on the fourth floor, uncovered the money hidden beneath clothing on Thursday, June 5, 2025. MP Pukkamon expressed doubts about Taweewat’s claim of earning the funds through his legal work, suggesting banknote serial numbers could unlock clues about its origin, intensifying scrutiny on the telecom adviser’s financial dealings.

Water Pipe Incident Cited

Taweewat told police he mistakenly threw out the box during a fifth-floor condo flood caused by a burst pipe, believing it held only old clothes. However, the case gained traction as reports emerged that his wife, a director at the National Anti-Corruption Commission, may need to explain why the 12 million baht wasn’t declared, raising questions about transparency in 2025.

Anti-Corruption Agencies Step In

Dual Probe Launched

On Monday, officials from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, and Anti-Corruption Division met to address the issue. Suksan Prasara-ae, NACC’s Bureau of Investigation and Special Operations director, outlined a two-pronged investigation: reviewing the wife’s asset declaration and tracing the cash’s ownership, with further coordination planned with Provincial Police Region 1 on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

Future Steps in Investigation

Collaboration with Police Scheduled

The investigation will hinge on confirming the money’s owner and source, with anti-graft agencies set to determine its legitimacy once police findings are in. This collaborative effort aims to ensure accountability, keeping the public informed as authorities delve into the unusual circumstances surrounding the discarded fortune in Nonthaburi.
