Agreement Reached on Sunday Morning

Cambodian troops have agreed to withdraw from the Thai border in Ubon Ratchathani province following a critical negotiation on Sunday, June 8, 2025. The dialogue, initiated at 10 a.m. at the disputed Chong Bok area in Nam Yuen district, involved Thailand’s Suranaree Task Force and Cambodian military representatives, marking a significant step toward de-escalating tensions along the frontier.

Coordination and Approval Process

Military Leaders Facilitate Retreat

The Suranaree Task Force promptly reported the Cambodian outreach to Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang, commander of the Second Army Region, who escalated it to Army chief Gen Pana Klaewplodthuk for approval. With authorization granted, the talks proceeded smoothly, leading to a mutual decision for both sides to return to their 2024 positions and for Cambodia to fill in dug trenches, fostering stability in the region.

Terms of the Withdrawal Agreement

Weekly Meetings to Maintain Peace

The negotiation concluded with Thai and Cambodian soldiers retreating to their previous locations, while both nations committed to weekly meetings of representatives at the site. This arrangement, confirmed by army spokesman Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree, aims to prevent future conflicts and build on the progress made, offering a hopeful outlook for border relations in 2025.

Context of Recent Border Restrictions

Thai Measures Prompt Retreat

The agreement came a day after Thailand imposed border crossing limits on Saturday evening, June 7, 2025, targeting gamblers and heavy truck supplies. Reports also hinted at potential electricity and internet cutoffs for Cambodian border areas, reflecting Thailand’s response to Cambodia’s earlier trench-digging and the May 28 skirmish, which had escalated tensions between the neighbors.

Foreign Ministry’s Strategic Approach

Four-Stage Plan Influences Outcome

The Foreign Ministry explained that the border restrictions were part of a four-stage strategy to counter Cambodia’s violation of a prior agreement by entering Chong Bok. By barring gamblers and threatening a full closure if tensions rise, Thailand pressured Cambodia into retreat, highlighting the effectiveness of its phased measures in resolving the ongoing border dispute in 2025.
