Manchester United are gearing up for a crucial Europa League quarter-final clash against Lyon following a lackluster 0-0 draw in the Manchester derby. While Sunday’s stalemate did little to inspire confidence, the Red Devils still have a clear path to Champions League qualification—winning the Europa League.

With United languishing in 13th place in the Premier League, success in Europe has become their only realistic route back to elite continental football. Manager Ruben Amorim is already planning a major squad overhaul this summer, with a new striker high on the priority list.

Four Striker Targets Identified

According to reports, United have drawn up a four-man shortlist to bolster their attack:

  1. Liam Delap (Ipswich Town) – The 22-year-old has impressed with 12 Premier League goals this season. A £40 million release clause could be activated if Ipswich are relegated.
  2. Victor Osimhen (Napoli) – The Nigerian powerhouse, currently on loan at Galatasaray, has 18 months left on his Napoli deal but remains a high-profile option.
  3. Viktor Gyökeres (Sporting CP) – A former Amorim player, the Swedish striker has been in sensational form, netting 44 goals in 44 games this season.
  4. Hugo Ekitike (Eintracht Frankfurt) – The young French forward has 19 goals this term and could be a more affordable alternative.

Delap is reportedly the top target, with United keen to secure his signature ahead of the competition.

Controversial Post-Season Tour Sparks Backlash

Meanwhile, the club has confirmed a post-season tour to Hong Kong and Malaysia, set to begin immediately after their final Premier League match on May 25. The trip includes a high-profile friendly against an ASEAN All-Stars team on May 28 and is expected to generate £10 million in revenue.

Chief executive Omar Berrada highlighted the financial benefits, but the decision has drawn criticism. Players and experts have raised concerns over burnout, injury risks, and the environmental impact of long-haul travel.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has defended the move, emphasizing the need for additional revenue streams. He previously warned that the club faced financial peril before his cost-cutting measures were implemented.

As United prepare for their Europa League showdown, off-field controversies and transfer plans continue to dominate headlines—adding further pressure on Amorim’s rebuilding project.
