Bangkok’s Growing Concerns About Building Safety

Earthquake Sparks Fear Among Residents

A recent survey conducted by Nida Poll revealed widespread concerns among Bangkok residents regarding the structural safety of buildings following the recent earthquake. The poll, conducted between April 1-3, included responses from 1,300 individuals across various demographics.

Majority Worried About Building Stability

The survey showed that 68.09% of respondents were worried about the stability and safety of buildings in the city. Additionally, 59.47% expressed doubts about the effectiveness of early warning systems, while 43.97% feared another powerful quake might strike soon.

Emergency Preparedness and Economic Impact

Traffic and Transport Management in Crisis

A significant portion of respondents (33.51%) raised concerns about traffic and public transport management during emergencies. Another 33.21% emphasized the need for better disaster preparedness and response strategies.

Economic Fallout Adds to Anxiety

Nearly 29.01% of those surveyed feared the negative economic impacts of earthquakes on Thailand’s economy. This concern reflects broader apprehensions about the nation’s ability to recover from such disasters.

Accountability and Psychological Effects

Government Action on Collapsed Building

The collapse of the State Audit Office building has led to calls for stricter legal action against those responsible, with 22.98% of respondents demanding accountability.

Psychological Toll on Residents

Psychological concerns also surfaced, with 22.82% worried about panic or hysteria spreading among the public even without immediate danger. Fake news was another issue, cited by 21.53% as a source of public anxiety.

Confidence in Building Types

Mixed Confidence in Public Structures

The survey revealed varying confidence levels in different building types. Shopping malls inspired moderate trust at 47.25%, while religious buildings had a confidence rating of 40.61%.

Hotels and Educational Institutions Fare Better

Hotels garnered a 42.75% confidence rating, while private educational institutions ranked higher at 53.12%. However, government buildings faced skepticism, with nearly half expressing doubts about their safety.

Lessons from the Earthquake

Call for Improved Building Standards

Experts are urging a review of construction standards in Bangkok to ensure safety during future earthquakes. Many buildings were constructed before updated regulations were introduced in 2007.

Structural Design Under Scrutiny

Concerns have been raised over designs like beamless structures, which maximize space but perform poorly during seismic events. Civil engineers advocate for stricter enforcement and upgrades to safety codes.

Future Steps for Bangkok’s Resilience

Inspection Efforts Underway

Bangkok authorities are mobilizing structural engineers to inspect damaged buildings and identify vulnerabilities. The Thailand Structural Engineers Association is recruiting volunteers for this task.

Strengthening Preparedness Measures

Residents are calling for enhanced disaster preparedness programs to mitigate risks during future emergencies. These efforts aim to bolster public confidence and ensure long-term resilience against natural disasters.

This earthquake serves as a wake-up call for Bangkok to prioritize infrastructure safety and emergency readiness as it continues to grow as a bustling metropolis filled with high-rise buildings and vibrant activity.
