Impact of False Tsunami Warning on Trang Tourism

Social Media Misinformation Causes Hotel Cancellations

A false tsunami warning circulated on social media after Myanmar’s recent earthquake has led to a significant decline in tourism in Trang. Somsak Suaboonthong, president of the Trang Tourism and Hotel Association, revealed that 30% of tourists canceled their hotel bookings, while 50% to 60% postponed their trips indefinitely.

Severe Impact on Hotel Operators

The wave of cancellations and postponements has severely affected hotel operators in Trang and other Andaman coastal provinces. Somsak noted that similar disruptions were likely occurring in neighboring provinces due to the widespread misinformation.

Songkran Tourism Uncertainty

Early Bookings Affected by Public Reaction

The false warnings are expected to impact tourism during the Songkran holidays, though the extent remains uncertain. Large tour groups typically book early, while individual tourists make reservations closer to the holiday, making it difficult to predict the full impact.

Historical Trends in Disaster-Related Tourism Declines

Somsak highlighted that tourist numbers typically drop by around 30% following disasters, but he reassured visitors that Trang remains safe with robust safety measures in place.

Clarifications on Sea Level Phenomena

Misinterpretation of Natural Sea Level Changes

Somsak clarified that recent images showing extreme sea levels were caused by lunar cycles (full moon and new moon) and were unrelated to tsunamis. This explanation aimed to address public concerns and restore confidence in visiting Trang.

Safety Measures for Tourists

Authorities have implemented necessary rescue operations and safety protocols to ensure visitors’ well-being during their stay in Trang and other Andaman provinces.
