A Journey Through Medical History

From Chinese Immigrants to Western Medicine Pioneers

The Berlin Pharmaceutical Museum, nestled in a century-old European-style building at the corner of Sua Pa intersection in Bangkok, offers visitors a unique glimpse into the fascinating history of Western medicine in Thailand. This hidden gem tells the story of Dr. Chai Chainuvati, a pioneering physician who transformed his small clinic into one of Thailand’s largest pharmaceutical companies.

The Legacy of Dr. Chai Chainuvati

From Berlin Dispensary to Modern Pharmaceutical Industry

Dr. Chai, known affectionately as “Dr. Berlin” to his patients, opened the Berlin Dispensary in 1932. The museum’s first floor showcases his remarkable journey, from his family’s migration from China to the establishment of his groundbreaking clinic. Visitors can explore a meticulously recreated examination room and pharmacy, complete with original furniture and Dr. Chai’s handwritten medical journals.

A Time Capsule of Medical Innovation

Vintage Equipment and Cutting-Edge Technology

The museum houses an impressive collection of medical artifacts, including the first tablet press machine Dr. Chai acquired from Germany in 1969. This single-punch machine, capable of producing 200 tablets per minute, stands in stark contrast to today’s computer-programmed equipment that can churn out 6,000 tablets per minute. The exhibit highlights the rapid evolution of pharmaceutical manufacturing in Thailand.

From Family Business to Industry Leader

The Birth of Berlin Pharmaceutical Industry

As visitors progress through the museum, they witness the transformation of the Berlin Dispensary into the Berlin Pharmaceutical Industry. Today, the company ranks among Thailand’s top five medical manufacturers, specializing in treatments for cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases. The museum offers a unique perspective on this growth, from small family-run operations to modern, international-standard facilities.

Interactive Learning Experience

Engaging Exhibits for All Ages

The Berlin Pharmaceutical Museum goes beyond static displays, offering interactive exhibits that bring the history of medicine to life. Visitors can explore the simulated facilities of the original Berlin Dispensary, gaining insight into early 20th-century medical practices. The museum’s engaging approach makes it an educational destination for both adults and children interested in medical history and innovation.

Plan Your Visit

A Must-See Destination in Bangkok

Located on Charoen Krung Road, the Berlin Pharmaceutical Museum is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, except on Tuesdays. With an affordable admission fee of 40 Baht, it offers an enriching experience for locals and tourists alike. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore this unique blend of personal history, medical advancement, and Thai entrepreneurship in the heart of Bangkok.
