“Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism & Sports Year 2025” Launched

Tourism as Key Economic Driver

The Thai government has designated 2025 as the “Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism & Sports Year 2025,” recognizing tourism as a crucial strategy for economic growth. This initiative aims to showcase Thailand’s cultural richness, soft power, and innovation on the global stage.

Record-Breaking Tourism Performance

Exceeding Targets and Boosting GDP

In 2024, Thailand surpassed its target of 35 million foreign visitors, generating over €47.4 billion and contributing approximately 15% to the country’s GDP. This success has set the stage for even more ambitious goals in 2025.

Ambitious Targets for 2025

Aiming for 39 Million International Visitors

The government has set its sights on attracting 39 million international visitors in 2025, with a projected revenue of €98 billion. European visitors are expected to play a significant role, with an estimated 10.6 million arrivals contributing €24.2 billion to the economy.

Five-Point Strategy for Tourism Excellence

Enhancing Visitor Experience and Infrastructure

To achieve these goals, the government has implemented a five-point strategy:

  1. Improving visa procedures and expanding visa exemptions to 93 countries and territories
  2. Developing infrastructure to establish Thailand as Southeast Asia’s aviation hub
  3. Promoting soft power industries
  4. Positioning Thailand as a medical and wellness tourism destination
  5. Advancing sustainable tourism practices

Infrastructure Development for Increased Capacity

Expanding Aviation Capabilities

The government plans to enhance Thailand’s aviation infrastructure, aiming to accommodate 250 million passengers annually. This includes expanding major airports like Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, upgrading regional airports, and constructing new facilities such as the Andaman and Lanna airports.

Sustainable and High-Value Tourism Focus

Balancing Growth with Responsibility

As Thailand approaches pre-pandemic tourism levels, the government is mindful of potential overtourism issues. The focus is on developing a “new tourism” model that balances growth with sustainability, ensuring a positive experience for visitors while benefiting local communities and the environment.
