Arsenal’s Red Cards: Are Mikel Arteta’s Gunners Ill-Disciplined or Just Facing Bad Luck in the Premier League?

Arsenal’s promising start to the 2024/25 Premier League season has been overshadowed by a worrying trend—three red cards in their opening eight matches. The most recent dismissal came when William Saliba was sent off against Bournemouth, following earlier red cards for Leandro Trossard and Declan Rice. As a result, Arsenal has dropped critical points, leaving them trailing behind title contenders Liverpool and Manchester City.

The growing number of red cards has sparked concerns over Arsenal’s discipline, with Jamie Carragher warning that their ill-discipline could severely impact their chances of staying in the Premier League title race. But is the issue truly one of ill-discipline, or could the Gunners just be experiencing a string of bad luck?

Arteta’s Frustration with Arsenal’s Discipline

In a recent press conference, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta did not mince words about his team’s red-card woes. “We cannot continue to play with 10 men, especially at this level,” Arteta said. “It’s clear we need to eradicate this issue. It’s costing us games, and we cannot afford that in such a competitive season.”

The Gunners have performed admirably in games where they have managed to keep all 11 players on the field, boasting a 100% win rate in matches without dismissals. However, when they see red, their performance slips, and vital points are lost.

Carragher’s Concern: Red Cards Could Cost Arsenal the Title

Premier League pundit Jamie Carragher has voiced his concerns about Arsenal’s growing red-card problem, suggesting that this ill-discipline could have serious consequences. “To get three red cards in the first eight games is really poor,” Carragher said. “If it doesn’t change quickly, they’re going to have a big problem, especially if they fall further behind Manchester City.”

Despite sitting near the top of the Premier League table, Arsenal’s red cards have directly contributed to dropped points, placing them at a disadvantage early in the season. The Premier League title race is tight, and falling behind by even a few points can be costly when competing with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, both of whom have had strong starts to the season.

Discipline or Bad Luck?

The real question is whether these red cards are a result of reckless behavior on the part of Arsenal players or if the team has simply been unlucky with refereeing decisions. While each red card has been justified according to match officials, some fans and analysts argue that the dismissals are situational rather than reflective of a broader disciplinary issue within the squad.

For example, Leandro Trossard’s red card earlier in the season was seen as a result of an unfortunate tackle, while Declan Rice’s sending-off came after a heated contest that could have gone either way.

The Path Forward for Arsenal

If Arsenal hopes to remain competitive in the title race, addressing this red-card issue will be crucial. Arteta must find a way to keep his players composed under pressure, particularly as the fixtures pile up and every point becomes more valuable.

Arteta’s Gunners have shown that they can dominate opponents when they maintain discipline, with a perfect record in matches where they haven’t seen red. The challenge will be ensuring they keep their cool in high-pressure situations, especially against top teams like Liverpool, who they face next in a high-stakes Premier League clash.

The next few weeks will be critical for Arsenal as they try to put these early-season woes behind them and refocus on their Premier League title ambitions.
