Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra Targeted by AI Voice Cloning Scam

Thailand’s Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, disclosed on January 15, 2025, that she was nearly deceived by a sophisticated scam call. The scammer impersonated a foreign leader using advanced AI voice cloning technology. During a press conference, she emphasized the growing threat of such scams, particularly in the digital age.

Details of the AI Scam Incident

In her account, the prime minister revealed that she received a voice message from someone claiming to be a leader of another country. The message informed her that she was expected to make a donation, supported by an audio clip that mimicked the leader’s voice. However, the link provided for the donation led to an account in a different country, raising her suspicions about the legitimacy of the call.

Reaction and Response to the Scam

Paetongtarn expressed her shock at the scam’s sophistication, stating, “I want to warn people that I almost fell victim. This matter is important.” She has since instructed Deputy Prime Minister Prasert Jantararuangthong to investigate the incident further, as the scammers utilized an app from a foreign country rather than local communication platforms like Line.

Broader Implications for ASEAN and Digital Security

During her remarks, Prime Minister Shinawatra highlighted the necessity for ASEAN member countries to collaborate in combating such transnational online scams. She chaired the 5th ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting shortly after revealing her experience with the scam. The meeting focused on enhancing regional cooperation to safeguard digital economies against fraud.

The Rise of AI-Enabled Scams

This incident underscores a worrying trend where scammers leverage AI technologies to create convincing impersonations of prominent figures. Experts warn that these scams are becoming increasingly prevalent in Southeast Asia, with organized crime syndicates exploiting technological advancements to target individuals and officials alike. In conclusion, as technology evolves, so too do the tactics employed by fraudsters. It is crucial for both individuals and governments to remain vigilant against these sophisticated scams.
