Airports of Thailand to Implement Advanced Biometric Systems

The Airports of Thailand (AoT) is set to upgrade its biometric identification systems to enhance passenger service times at major airports. AoT director Kerati Kijmanawat announced on Wednesday that the biometric system has already been rolled out at six key international airports: SuvarnabhumiDon MueangChiang MaiPhuketMae Fah Luang Chiang Rai, and Hat Yai.

Improved Support for Thai ID Cards

Currently, the biometric system does not fully support the use of Thai ID cards. However, starting January 15, 2025, it will accommodate ID cards without expiration dates, specifically for individuals aged 70 and older. Additionally, the system will be enhanced to support ID cards with English spellings that exceed 20 letters.

Surge in Passenger Traffic During New Year Period

During the recent New Year festival from December 27 to January 2, Suvarnabhumi Airport experienced a significant influx of travelers, handling 1.4 million passengers, which is a 16.1% increase compared to the previous year. Overall, AoT airports recorded a total of 2.97 million passengers, marking a 19.7% rise year-on-year, with international passenger numbers increasing by 23.8%.

Efficient Service Times Reported

Despite the increased passenger volume, AoT reported that services operated smoothly across all six airports without congestion in passenger terminals. The average service time for international arrivals was approximately 22 minutes, while departures averaged 28 minutes. Domestic arrivals took about 12 minutes, and departures were around 16 minutes.

Commitment to Technological Advancements

Kerati emphasized that AoT is dedicated to leveraging various technologies to improve airport services further. The implementation of biometric identification systems is part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and providing a seamless travel experience for passengers.

Aiming for World-Class Airport Services

As Thailand’s aviation sector rebounds from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, these enhancements signal a commitment to modernizing airport operations and improving passenger experiences. The AoT’s initiatives are expected to bolster tourism and contribute positively to the country’s economic recovery efforts.
