Tourist Penalized for Ignoring Police Orders During New Year Countdown

A Japanese tourist, identified as Hirano, has been fined 3,000 baht for disobeying a police order during the New Year Countdown celebrations in Chiang Mai. The incident occurred when Hirano attempted to release a hot-air lantern in a crowded area, posing a potential fire risk.

Details of the Incident

Confrontation with Police

The altercation took place shortly after midnight on Wednesday when Hirano tried to launch the lantern in front of the Tha Phae Gate. A police officer named Thaweesak approached him and attempted to pull the lantern down for safety reasons. The situation escalated as Hirano reacted angrily, yelling at the officer and grabbing him by the collar.

Social Media Reaction

A video capturing the confrontation quickly spread across social media, drawing attention to the incident and sparking discussions about tourist behavior and safety regulations in Thailand.

Apology and Fine Imposed

Hirano’s Response

Later that evening, Hirano visited the Chiang Mai police station to apologize to Officer Thaweesak. He expressed that he misunderstood the regulations regarding lantern releases in the area, which contributed to his frustration during the encounter.

Police Explanation and Fine

The police took the opportunity to explain the law surrounding hot-air lanterns, emphasizing public safety concerns. Hirano accepted the 3,000 baht fine, acknowledging his mistake but maintaining that this incident would not deter him from visiting Thailand again.

A Lesson in Cultural Awareness

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding local laws and customs while traveling. Hirano’s experience highlights how miscommunication can lead to misunderstandings, especially during festive occasions. As tourism continues to grow in Thailand, it is crucial for visitors to respect regulations that ensure safety for everyone involved.
