Tens of Thousands Travel Back to Bangkok Following New Year Celebrations
As the New Year holiday comes to a close, tens of thousands of people flocked to bus terminals and provincial railway stations on January 1, 2025, to return to Bangkok. According to the state-run Transport Co, an estimated 70,000 to 90,000 travelers were expected to make their way back to the capital by bus and passenger van.
Transport Arrangements for Returning Travelers
High Volume of Bus and Van Trips
On January 1, the Transport Co anticipates between 4,200 and 4,500 trips will be made to accommodate the influx of passengers. The previous day saw 58,749 people return to the city, completing 3,556 trips.
Enhanced Services at Central Terminal
Acting Transport Co president Atthawit Rakjamroon stated that additional buses, drivers, and service staff have been placed on standby to ensure smooth operations. All arriving buses at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station will drop passengers at Gate 3, facilitating convenient connections with other public transport options.

Deputy Transport Minister Surapong Piyachote emphasized that all public transport providers are required to strictly adhere to safety protocols. The Transport Co has collaborated with various agencies, including the Department of Land Transport, to ensure passenger safety during this busy travel period.
Thorough Inspections and Driver Testing
All buses undergo rigorous safety inspections before hitting the road. Additionally, drivers are tested for drugs and alcohol. For journeys exceeding four hours, two drivers are mandated to prevent fatigue-related incidents.
Increased Train Services for New Year Travelers

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is also prepared for the surge in travelers returning to Bangkok. SRT governor Veeris Ammarapala announced that five extra trains would be provided from various locations including Hat Yai and Chiang Mai.
Support Staff at Central Terminal
SRT staff will be stationed at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station to assist travelers with any inquiries or needs they may have during their return journey.
