Identification of Victims from The Ember Hotel Fire

Authorities have confirmed the identities of the three victims involved in the tragic fire at The Ember Hotel near Khao San Road in Bangkok. Among them is Pimentel Canales Albuquerque, a 24-year-old Brazilian woman who had recently become engaged. The other two victims are Tuzov Victor, a 27-year-old Ukrainian man, and Freeman Timothy Jr., a 35-year-old American man.

Details Surrounding the Incident

The fire occurred late Sunday night, with initial reports indicating that it started in Room 511. Pimentel was found in the room where the blaze is believed to have originated, while Tuzov and Freeman were later pronounced at nearby hospitals. Seven others sustained injuries, including hotel electrician Sorawut Liewhamai and two Dutch tourists, Marvin Holtkamp and Nadine Hueftlein.

Emergency Response and Evacuations

Evacuation Efforts During the Fire

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt stated that approximately 75 guests were present at the hotel during the fire. Many guests managed to escape to the rooftop and were rescued using fire truck ladders. The governor noted that officials believe the fire primarily affected Room 511, which sustained significant damage.

Circumstances of the Brazilian Woman’s Situation

Reports suggest that Pimentel may have mistakenly entered Room 511 while attempting to escape the smoke-filled hotel. She had checked in with her fiancé, who survived the incident but became separated from her during the evacuation.

Investigation into Fire Causes

Preliminary Findings on Fire Origin

Initial investigations indicate that the fire likely started in a bed within Room 511, as evidence showed that the mattress was completely burned, leaving only coil springs behind. The structure of the hotel remained intact after firefighters contained the blaze within about an hour.

Ongoing Investigations and Safety Measures

Authorities are currently looking for three Korean men who were registered as guests in Room 511 but were not present during the incident. The hotel, which opened in April 2022, had two fire exits and sufficient fire extinguishers; however, it lacked a sprinkler system as it was not required for its size.

Compensation for Victims

Government Support for Affected Families

In response to this tragedy, Natthriya Thaweevong, permanent secretary for tourism and sports, announced that the government would provide compensation of 1 million baht for each victim’s family and 500,000 baht for each injury case. This financial support aims to assist those affected by this unfortunate event.

Community Reflection and Safety Awareness

The Ember Hotel fire serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of safety measures in hospitality settings. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to review safety protocols across similar establishments to prevent future incidents. The community mourns the loss of life while supporting the families affected by this heartbreaking event.
