Ongoing Crisis Affects Over 128,000 Families

As of December 16, 2024, severe flooding persists in five southern provinces of Thailand, impacting at least 128,000 families. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has reported significant challenges as communities grapple with rising water levels and ongoing rainfall.

Areas Affected by Flooding

Director-general Pasakorn Boonyalak stated that flooding has been reported in 1,998 villages across Chumphon, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Ranong, and Surat Thani provinces.

  • Chumphon: Flooding has been noted in the districts of Lamae, Lang Suan, Muang, Pathiu, Phato, Sawi, Tha Sae, and Thung Tako. Fortunately, water levels in some areas are beginning to decline.
  • Nakhon Si Thammarat: In contrast, districts such as Bang Khan, Chalerm Prakiat, and Muang are experiencing rising water levels. The situation remains critical as floodwaters continue to rise.
  • Phatthalung: Flooding has been reported in Khuan Khanun and Muang districts; however, the water level is beginning to fall.
  • Ranong: Areas like Kra Buri and La-un are also facing flooding issues, but reports indicate that water levels are decreasing.
  • Surat Thani: Inundations have been noted in Ban Na San, Chaiya, Koh Phangan, Koh Samui, and other districts where water levels are still on the rise.

Casualties and Damage Reports

Confirmed Deaths and Widespread Impact

As the flooding crisis continues to unfold, Mr. Pasakorn confirmed that eight fatalities have been attributed to the floods across the affected provinces.

  • Total Impact: Since the onset of the southern wet season, flooding has affected a staggering 737,091 households across 11 provinces and resulted in a total of 35 confirmed deaths.

Government Response and Relief Efforts

Addressing the Needs of Affected Communities

In response to the ongoing crisis, local authorities are mobilizing resources to assist those impacted by the floods. Emergency response teams are working diligently to provide relief and support to affected families.

  • Relief Initiatives: The government is coordinating with various agencies to deliver essential supplies and aid to communities facing hardships due to the flooding.

A Call for Preparedness and Support

The continued flooding in southern Thailand highlights the urgent need for preparedness in the face of natural disasters. As communities work together to navigate this crisis, it is crucial for local authorities and organizations to provide timely support and resources. The resilience of affected families will be key as they confront the challenges posed by this severe weather event.
