Major Upgrades Planned to Enhance Operations and Capacity

The Transport Ministry of Thailand has announced ambitious plans to upgrade Hua Hin Airport to international status by next year. This transformation aims to accommodate the growing number of passengers and enhance travel convenience for both domestic and international flights.

Steps Towards International Certification

Transport Deputy Minister Manaporn Charoensri revealed that the ministry has tasked various agencies, including the Department of Airports and the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand, with developing Hua Hin’s operations to secure the necessary certification for international operations.

  • Increasing Flight Options: The full operation of an international airport is expected to significantly boost the number of flights available, benefiting the tourism sector and stimulating the local economy.

Key Development Projects Underway

Expanding Runway and Infrastructure

Danai Ruangsorn, director-general of the Department of Airports (DoA), outlined two major projects as part of the development plan for Hua Hin Airport.

  • Runway Expansion: The first project involves expanding the runway to meet international standards, increasing its width to 45 meters to accommodate larger aircraft. This expansion is projected to cost approximately 239 million baht and is currently undergoing a standards inspection by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT).
  • Additional Infrastructure Improvements: The second project includes expanding the road tunnel, runway strip, and runway-end safety area, with an estimated investment of around 300 million baht awaiting approval from the Budget Bureau.

Timeline for Completion

Project Phases and Expected Outcomes

The DoA anticipates that contracts for these projects will be signed this month, with construction set to commence in January 2025. The completion date is expected by April 2026.

  • Current Capacity: Presently, Hua Hin Airport can accommodate Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircraft, handling about 180 passengers per flight. The passenger terminal is also slated for expansion to increase its capacity from 300 passengers per hour to approximately 860,000 annually.

Current Flight Operations

Domestic Services Already in Place

Currently, Hua Hin Airport operates domestic flights, with Thai AirAsia providing service on the Chiang Mai–Hua Hin route four times a week. This existing service lays the groundwork for future international connectivity.

  • Tourism Growth Potential: With these upgrades, Hua Hin aims to attract more tourists to its beautiful beaches and vibrant local culture while improving connections to other destinations across Thailand.

A Bright Future for Hua Hin Airport

The planned transformation of Hua Hin Airport into an international hub marks a significant step forward for Thailand’s aviation sector. By enhancing its infrastructure and capabilities, the airport is poised to play a vital role in boosting tourism and economic growth in the region. As preparations continue, local stakeholders are optimistic about the positive impacts this upgrade will bring. T
