Celebrated National Artist Passes Away at Age 88

Thailand is in mourning following the death of Sub-Lieutenant Santi Loonpe, a revered national artist known for his legendary renditions of King Rama IX’s compositions and patriotic songs. Santi passed away at the age of 88 from an undisclosed illness at Chulalongkorn Hospital in Bangkok on December 10, 2024.

Early Life and Musical Journey

From Humble Beginnings to National Fame

Born on June 22, 1939, in Phra Nakhon province, which later became part of Bangkok, Santi’s musical talent was nurtured by his mother, a singer from Lampang, and his father, who was inspired by Italian singer-songwriter Lucio Dalla. He began his formal training under Sang Asatthawasee with the Thammasat University Band while pursuing his studies.Training Abroad:

  • Santi further honed his skills in choir singing in Israel and trained as a tenor at various churches in Thailand, eventually becoming the only Thai member of the Bangkok Combined Choir (BBC).

He recalled how the King would listen to their practice sessions at Chitralada Royal Villa, offering guidance akin to that of a producer.

In 2015, Santi was honored as a national artist in performing arts – vocals by Thailand’s Culture Ministry’s Office of National Culture Commission. His contributions to music and culture have left an indelible mark on Thai society.
