Yala’s Flood Challenges

The mayor of Yala city municipality, Pongsak Yingchoncharoen, is actively addressing long-standing flood issues in the region. During a recent update on December 7, he proposed guidelines aimed at mitigating the impact of recurrent flooding while revisiting plans for the construction of the Krong Pinang and Kuemeng dams as part of a comprehensive flood prevention strategy.

Current Flood Situation in Yala

Impact on Residents

Mr. Pongsak highlighted the severe flooding that has affected over 20,000 households in Yala. Many residents, particularly the elderly, are struggling to cope with the aftermath, with some experiencing flooding for the first time. The municipality has been proactive in managing waste and delivering relief to those impacted by distributing survival kits and other forms of aid.Key Statistics:

  • Over 20,000 households have been affected by recent floods.
  • Many residents are facing significant challenges due to unprecedented flooding.

Economic Implications of Flooding

Threats to Future Investments

The mayor expressed concern that ongoing flooding threatens future investments in Yala, which has been recovering from past unrest in the Deep South. Economic revitalization efforts, including the opening of large department stores, are at risk if flooding continues to disrupt daily life.Economic Concerns:

  • Recurrent flooding poses a threat to local businesses and investor confidence.
  • The need for sustainable solutions is critical for economic growth.

Learning from Successful Flood Prevention

Inspiration from Hat Yai District

Pongsak drew inspiration from the successful flood prevention measures implemented in Hat Yai district, located in neighboring Songkhla province. Hat Yai has remained free from major floods for nearly two decades, showcasing effective strategies that could be adapted for Yala.Strategic Insights:

  • Implementing similar flood prevention measures could enhance confidence among residents and investors.
  • A comprehensive water management plan is essential for long-term solutions.

Proposed Dam Construction Plans

Revisiting Long-standing Proposals

The mayor announced plans to revisit the decades-old proposals for constructing the Krong Pinang Dam, first introduced 50 years ago, and the Kuemeng Dam in the Ahsong subdistrict. These projects aim to mitigate flooding not only in Yala’s Raman district but also in neighboring areas such as Sukhirin, Rueso, and Sri Sakhon districts in Narathiwat province.Dam Construction Goals:

  • The Krong Pinang Dam aims to provide significant flood relief.
  • The Kuemeng Dam is expected to benefit multiple districts across provincial borders.

Innovative Water Management Solutions

Addressing Specific Community Needs

For densely populated areas like Ban Budi in Sateng Nok subdistrict, which houses around 200,000 residents, Mr. Pongsak proposed developing a system to divert water from Budi subdistrict directly to the Sai Buri River. Additionally, he suggested redirecting water from the old market area to the Pattani River to alleviate flooding.
