Digital Identity and Biometrics
Digital Identity refers to the digital representation of an individual, organization, or device in the online world. As our physical and digital lives merge, the need for secure, verifiable identification has become paramount. Biometrics—the measurement of unique physical characteristics such as fingerprints, facial patterns, and iris scans—has emerged as the gold standard for securing these identities. The future of digital identity is moving toward “Self-Sovereign Identity” (SSI), where individuals have total control over their personal data without relying on a central authority or social media giant. This is often achieved using blockchain technology to create a tamper-proof record of identity attributes. While biometrics offers incredible convenience and security, it also raises profound concerns regarding “data permanence.” If your biometric data is breached, it cannot be changed like a password, leading to permanent security risks. As we move toward a world of “Passwordless Authentication,” the challenge will be to balance the efficiency of biometric identification with the fundamental right to digital privacy and the protection of our most personal data.
