Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a critical technology designed to prevent large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) from being released into the atmosphere from fossil fuel power plants and industrial facilities. The process involves three main steps: capturing the CO2 produced by industrial processes, transporting it to a storage site, and injecting it deep underground into geological formations where it can be permanently trapped. This technology is seen as a vital bridge to help industries like steel and cement production reach “Net Zero” emissions.
A newer variation, known as Direct Air Capture (DAC), involves using giant fans and chemical filters to scrub CO2 directly from the ambient air, regardless of where it was emitted. While currently expensive and energy-intensive, the cost of DAC is falling as the technology scales. Some companies are even finding ways to turn captured carbon into useful products, such as carbon-neutral fuels or construction materials like “carbon-negative” concrete. As the global temperature continues to rise, CCS and DAC represent our best technological chances to actively reverse the accumulation of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.
