Smart Materials (Shape-Memory & Self-Healing)
Smart Materials are “programmable” substances that have properties designed to change in a controlled manner in response to external stimuli, such as temperature, light, pressure, or moisture. One of the most fascinating examples is Shape-Memory Alloys, which can be bent or deformed but will return to their original pre-set shape when heated. Another breakthrough is Self-Healing Materials, which contain micro-capsules of “healing agents” that rupture when the material is cracked, automatically filling and repairing the damage without human intervention.
The potential for these materials is vast. In the automotive industry, self-healing paint could make scratches disappear in the sun, while in infrastructure, self-healing concrete could fix its own cracks, preventing water from reaching internal steel reinforcements and causing collapse. In medicine, smart polymers are being used to create stents that expand only when they reach the correct body temperature. By creating products that last longer and require less maintenance, smart materials represent a major step toward a more sustainable and circular economy, reducing the waste generated by broken or worn-out goods.
