Real Madrid’s new manager, Xabi Alonso, has sent a strong message to Arsenal and Chelsea regarding Brazilian winger Rodrygo, insisting the forward remains a key part of his plans.
The 24-year-old has been the subject of transfer speculation in recent weeks, with both Premier League clubs reportedly keen on securing his signature. Rodrygo enjoyed another productive season at the Bernabéu, making 51 appearances and taking his total to 267 since joining from Santos in 2019.
His consistent performances over the past three seasons have made him one of Europe’s most sought-after wingers, attracting serious interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.
Arsenal’s Search for a Winger
Mikel Arteta is eager to strengthen his attacking options this summer after Arsenal narrowly missed out on the Premier League title for a third consecutive year. While Rodrygo is understood to be the Gunners’ top target, the financial demands of a potential deal could push them toward more affordable alternatives like Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma or Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo.
Chelsea’s Ambitions Under Maresca
Chelsea, meanwhile, are also monitoring Rodrygo’s situation as they prepare for a Champions League return under new boss Enzo Maresca. The Blues see the Brazilian as a marquee addition to their revamped squad but face stiff competition from their London rivals.
Alonso’s Firm Stance
However, Alonso—unveiled as Real Madrid’s new manager following Carlo Ancelotti’s departure—made it clear that Rodrygo is going nowhere.
“Rodrygo is a Real Madrid player,” Alonso declared. “He is a spectacular player, and we will need him.”
The former Bayer Leverkusen boss takes charge after Ancelotti left to manage Brazil’s national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Madrid endured a difficult final season under the Italian, losing La Liga to Barcelona and suffering a Copa del Rey final defeat to their fierce rivals. They were also eliminated from the Champions League by Arsenal.
A New Era Begins
Alonso, a former Madrid and Liverpool midfielder, expressed his excitement about leading the club into a new chapter.
“It’s the start of an era,” he said. “The fans are eager to write more history, and I’m thrilled to be part of it. This is my home.”
He praised the squad’s potential and vowed to build a team that plays with “energy, ambition, and a strong connection with the fans.”
Tribute to Ancelotti
Alonso also paid homage to his predecessor, crediting Ancelotti for shaping his coaching career.
“Carlo was my mentor and a huge influence,” he said. “Without him, I might not be here today. I’m honored to continue his legacy.”
With Alonso determined to keep Rodrygo in Madrid, Arsenal and Chelsea may need to shift their focus elsewhere in the transfer market. One thing is certain—Real Madrid’s star winger won’t be leaving without a fight.
