Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has downplayed recent comparisons between Spurs’ teenage sensation Mikey Moore and Brazilian star Neymar. Following a standout performance in Tottenham’s 1-0 victory over AZ Alkmaar, where Moore made only his second start, midfielder James Maddison jokingly likened the young winger to Neymar. However, Postecoglou insists Moore is focused on his own development and is unlikely to be affected by such comparisons.
“Just to be clear, I didn’t call Mikey Neymar,” Postecoglou said with a laugh. “Mikey is very grounded, and I don’t think we’ll see him showing up with a Ferrari or dyed hair anytime soon. He just wants to be himself.”
Moore, 17, has caught the eye of Tottenham fans and teammates alike, especially with Son Heung-min still managing muscle soreness. With limited options available, Postecoglou hinted that Moore could be in line for his first Premier League start against Crystal Palace. The Australian manager believes Moore is ready for the top flight but is cautious about overloading the young player, given his ongoing physical development.
“I think Mikey is ready to start a Premier League game,” Postecoglou said. “But we’re careful about managing his growth. He’s still developing physically, and asking him to play two games in a short span might be too much. We’ll assess him ahead of Sunday’s match.”
Tottenham’s depth in attack has been tested, with Richarlison and Wilson Odobert recently returning from injury and Timo Werner struggling to find form. However, Moore’s rapid rise has given Postecoglou an exciting option, and his composed performances at such a young age have won over both the fans and coaching staff. Spurs supporters have already adopted the chant “he’s one of our own” for Moore, a title previously reserved for club legend Harry Kane before his move to Bayern Munich in 2023.
The future looks bright for Moore, but he is not the only academy star catching the eye. Postecoglou hinted at further potential talent coming through Tottenham’s youth system, including Luca Williams-Barnett from the Under-18s.
“When Mikey started playing for the Under-21s, he immediately stood out,” Postecoglou explained. “Our academy director Simon Davies and his team were confident in his potential and his attitude. He’s not the only one; we’ve got a few more young players showing promise.”
As Tottenham prepares for their Premier League clash against Crystal Palace, all eyes will be on whether Postecoglou hands Moore his full league debut. Regardless of Sunday’s selection, it’s clear that Moore’s future at Spurs looks incredibly promising, and fans are eager to see how far he can go.
