Tottenham Hotspur could face a significant setback as Atletico Madrid are reportedly eyeing a summer move for star defender Cristian Romero. The potential departure of the Argentine center-back would be a major blow for manager Ange Postecoglou, who sees Romero as a key figure in his squad.
Atletico Madrid Keen on Securing Romero’s Signature
According to reports, Atletico Madrid are eager to strengthen their defense and have identified Romero as a top target for the upcoming transfer window. The 26-year-old has endured an injury-hit campaign, featuring in just 14 Premier League matches due to a hamstring issue. However, he has returned to full fitness and recently played for Argentina in the international break, starting against Uruguay.
With his contract at Tottenham set to expire in 2027, the club faces a critical decision. Unless they secure a contract extension soon, Spurs could be forced to consider offers to avoid losing him for a lower fee in the future.
Tottenham’s Struggles Could Influence Romero’s Decision
Currently, Tottenham are battling to regain their place among Europe’s elite, sitting mid-table in the Premier League. Their hopes of securing Champions League football rest on their Europa League campaign. If they fail to qualify for Europe’s premier competition, convincing Romero to stay could prove difficult.
The Argentine defender was a significant investment for Spurs, arriving from Atalanta in a £43 million deal. Given his market value, this summer could be the club’s best opportunity to turn a profit should they choose to sell.
Romero’s Concerns Over Tottenham’s Ambitions
Romero has previously expressed his frustrations about Tottenham’s inability to consistently strengthen their squad. In an interview with Telemundo Deportes, he pointed out the club’s struggles compared to their Premier League rivals.
“Manchester City competes every year, Liverpool reinforces its squad, Chelsea invests heavily even when they underperform, and now they are seeing results,” Romero stated. “Tottenham needs to realize that something isn’t working. Every season, it’s the same—players change, coaches change, but the same issues persist.”
His comments reflect growing concerns within the squad about Tottenham’s long-term project. Despite his outspoken nature, Postecoglou handled the situation diplomatically, revealing that Romero later apologized for his approach.
“I spoke to Cristian about it, and he admitted that while he had valid points, the way he expressed them wasn’t ideal,” the Spurs manager explained. “He cares about the club, but there’s a right way to handle these things.”
Will Romero Make the Switch to Atletico Madrid?
A move to Atletico Madrid would allow Romero to reunite with fellow Argentine Diego Simeone, a manager known for his defensive discipline and success in La Liga. Given Atletico’s consistent presence in the Champions League and their status as title contenders in Spain, the transfer could be an enticing prospect for Romero.
With the summer transfer window approaching, Tottenham must act swiftly to secure Romero’s future—or risk losing one of their most valuable assets to a European rival.
