Ministry Clarifies Security Focus

Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed allegations of political motives in its decision to cut electricity and internet access along the Thai-Cambodian border. Spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura emphasized that the measures aim solely to curb cross-border crimes, including human trafficking and cyber scams, prioritizing citizen safety.

No Pressure on Cambodia Intended

Call to Counter Misinformation

Nikorndej clarified that the restrictions are not designed to influence Cambodia or affect upcoming bilateral talks, such as the Joint Boundary Committee meeting. He urged Cambodian authorities to help dispel misinformation, reinforcing Thailand’s commitment to cooperative mechanisms and open dialogue.

Thailand Stands Firm on Jurisdiction

Non-Recognition of ICJ Ruling

The spokesperson reiterated Thailand’s long-standing rejection of the International Court of Justice’s 1960 jurisdiction designation over disputed areas. Despite Cambodia’s intent to escalate the issue of four contested sites, including Chong Bok and Ta Muen Thom, Thailand remains steadfast in its diplomatic and legal position.

Border Closures Are Temporary

Optimism for Improved Relations

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai described the border measures as timed openings rather than full closures. He expressed hope for stronger ties through enhanced military communication and proposed joint patrols, while affirming Thailand’s readiness to address any legal challenges.

Special Arrangements for Students

Relaxed Border Schedule Approved

The Royal Thai Army’s Burapha Command has introduced a relaxed border crossing schedule for Cambodian students. Following talks with Cambodian officials, a dedicated passage at Ban Khlong Luek and Poipet checkpoints will operate daily from 6am to 8am and 5pm to 6pm, ensuring students can attend school.

Fostering Positive Cross-Border Ties

Cambodia Welcomes Student Passage

Cambodia expressed appreciation for the student passage initiative, which is expected to reduce border tensions and promote goodwill. Phumtham highlighted the agreement as a step toward fostering positive relations, easing disruptions for communities along the Thai-Cambodian border.
